Sotheby's , New York. Zurbaran established himself as the leading painter of religious, large scale works in Seville by the early 1630's. While focusing on religious themes, the major compositions had already made use of genre and still life elements, incidental and humble objects meant to bring the sacred events portrayed closer to the everyday lives of the faithful. The present Agnus Dei is a skilful combination of two distinct genres, still life and religious painting. A number of autograph versions of this composition exist, all with slight differences. The present work is closest to the version in the San Diego Museum of Art but it is the only one to be signed and dated with the full latin inscription. It carried an estimate of between US $ 400,000 and 600,000.
