FINE PERFORMANCE BY SOTHEBY'S IN LONDON

Sotheby's Evening Sales of Impressionist & Modern Art and Surrealist Art held on March 1 2017 at Sotheby's London totalled £194,753,500, a sum which more than doubled the equivalent sale organized last year with a sell-through rate of 88.9%. 


Gustav Klimt's rare masterpiece Bauerngarten (1907), sold for £48million,  the third highest price for any work ever sold at auction in Europe* and a record price for a landscape by the artist. This work had remained in a private collection since 1994 . Another work by Klimt, "Girl in the Foliage" doubled its high-estimate at  £4million. 

René Magritte's "Souvenir de voyage" sold for £3.4million.while his "Repas de noces" gouache, first seen on the market, fetched £2million. Pablo Picasso's Plant de tomates ( 1944) bought at Sotheby's New York in 1976 for 198 000 USD, went for £17million and his "Femme nue assise" sold for £13.7million.

Contra-Composition VI, 1924 by Theo van Doesburg, founder and leader of the radical Dutch artistic movement ‘De Stijl', was acquired for for £1.6million  by the Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden, Netherlands,   Amedeo Modigliani's Portrait of Baranowski  sold for an above high-estimate £16 million,  Paul Gauguin's Te Arii Vahine (La Femme aux mangos (II)  fetched  £8.4million and Alfred Sisley's "Effet de neige à Louveciennes" went for a record price of £ 7,4 million.

First seen on the market, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Vier Akte unter Bäumen sold for £5,4 million, "Orpheus and Eurydice" by Oscar Kokoschka doubled its estimate soaring to a record price of £ 3,3 million, "Torse", a three-dimensional work by Jean Arp fetched a record bid of 3,3 million, Auguste Rodin's "Le Penseur" (petit modèle) went for £ 1,6 million, Francis Pic abia's "Ino" doubled its high estimate at £ 1,2 million, Paul Delvaux's "Filles au bord de l'eau" culminated at £ 2,3 million and Joan Miro's "Femme devant le soleil" fetched £ 620,750 to double its estimate.
