Sotheby's sale of Impressionist & Modern Art held in
London on June 19 2018 achieve a total of 87.5
million GBP with collectors demonstrating some interest in a wide range of pieces spanning
the entire field which saw Pablo Picasso's
"Buste de Femme" (1932) reaching 27,3 million at ten times the
2,4 million it achieved at auction in 1997 but overall the sale was rather a disappointment.
Alberto Giacometti's "Le Chat" executed in 1951 sold
for 12,6 million GBP while his expressive bust of his brother Diego went to a
Japanese buyer for 2,9 million GBP. Appearing at auction for the first time, Claude Monet's "La Méditerranée par vent de
mistral" sold for 7,2 million GBP while Camille Pissarro's "Le boulevard
Montmartre, brume du matin" was bought by an Asian private collector
for 3,5 million. Last seen at auction in 1875, Pierre-Auguste Renoir's "Après la tempête" (temps
d'orage), a rare example of the artist's early work, achieved 610,000 GBP
against a high estimate of 450,000.
Meanwhile a 1936 drawing by Henri Matisse showing the portrait of Mary Hutchinson culminated
at 3,1 million GBP while Marc Chagall's gouache "Les Amoureux en bleu" rose to 1,2 million against a high
estimate of 500,000 followed by René Magritte's gouache "La Belle Captive" which sold for 922,000 GBP.
Wassily Kandinsky's 1910 portrait of his companion Gabriele Münter painting in
front of her easel went for 5,3 million GBP and Paul Gauguin's "Fleurs dans un panier" doubled its estimate to
fetch 2,3 million GBP.
