Sotheby's sales of
European art and master paintings held on May 22 in New York yielded 23.4
million USD with six William Bouguereau's works totaling 4.6 million.
Bouguereau's 1884 canvas
" La Bourrique" (The
Pony-back ride) sold for 1.8 million USD to benefit the Berkshire Museum in
Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Painted during the height of the artist's commercial
success, the present work is a testament to Bouguereau's emotional and artistic
intuition.
The afternoon auction of Master Paintings was
led by a rare, intact, portable triptych dated to circa 1450-55 by Sienese artist Sano di Pietro,
which sold for 1.6 million USD – more than 4.5 times its high estimate, and
marking a new world auction record for the artist.This depiction of the Madonna and Christ Child, flanked by Saints John the
Evangelist and Jerome, is a fine example of the Sienese Trecento tradition.
From the Berkshire Museum, Adriaen Isenbrant's 16th-century
panel, The Flight Into Egypt, was
also among the sale's top prices, fetching 759,000 USD – nearly four times its
high estimate. Twenty-four Baroque still lifes from a private collection were
100% sold, together achieving 2.2 million USD, above a high estimate of $2
million. The group was led by Bartolomeo Cavarozzi's Basket of fruit on a stone ledge, which sold for 519,000 USD (estimate
200/300,000). Completed in the first quarter of the 17th century, the present
work is both an important and evocative example of the first generation of
Roman still life painting, and incorporates the lessons of Caravaggio's
groundbreaking, realistic approach to the genre.
A group of 13 works from the Jack and Eileen
Feather Collection also went beyond
expectations, fetching 900,000 USD overall led by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's Portrait of a
Young Woman Dressed as a Page, Bust-Length painted in Spain between 1762 and
1770, which sold for 275,000 USD.
