FRENCH POLICE LOSES ITS SLEUTH-HOUND
01 July 1997

The terror of art traffickers, Viscount Christian de B... has retired in May 1997 from the French art theft police brigade which has now lost one of its best experts. Unable to type a report or hold a gun, Viscount de B... had however an exceptional memory and an expert eye. He was capable of tracking down stolen works of art thanks to his acute knowledge and also to huge piles of documents he amassed during his career.

The grand-son of an aristocrat he joined the police forces in 1971 after failing to become an air pilot. He used to spend most of time visiting museums and antique dealers and helped to recover hundreds of stolen pieces during his career. His departure will be compensated for by the Treima computer programme now equipping police and listing all stolen goods.
