GOLTZIUS PAINTING REACHES  $ 1,4 MILLION AT AUCTION
01 June 1997

Adam and Eve, a major painting produced by Hendrick Goltzius in 1616, was sold for 1,4 million dollars on May 15th 1996 by Christie's in New York.
This work went to the dealer Bob Haboldt.
The Rialto Bridge by Canaletto went for 1,8 million dollars, 10% below the lowest estimate while an anonymous 18th century genre painting from the circle of Geneva artist Jean-Etienne Liotard went for US $ 340,000 against an estimate of 15,000.

On May 16th, Sotheby's followed with another sale of old master paintings. The surprise of the day was a floral composition by the 19th century French artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté which sold for 1,3 million dollars, well above the
US $ 120,000 high estimate.
Christie's only sold 59% of lots with a total turnover of
US $ 6,700,000 while Sotheby's fared slightly better with 64% of lots sold and a turnover of 10,970,000
