PAINTING STOLEN BY THE NAZIS FOUND IN ... JERUSALEM

An important painting by Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro, confiscated by the Nazis during the war, was traced back in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, it was learned in September 1999.

The painting titled «Boulevard Montmartre on a Sunny afternoon, Spring 1897», now estimated some US $ 8 million, came from the collection of German businessman Max Silberberg, who died in a concentration camp after his arrest by the Nazis.

Last June, his daughter-in-law, who lives in England, was given back by the German authorities a Van Gogh work worth US $ 5 million. She hopes that the Israeli authorities will satisfy her demand for restitution.
